Bear Always Steals From Trash Can So Dad Sets Up Clown To See If That Will Deter Him

Anyone who’s seen the classic Yogi Bear cartoons knows how bears feel about stealing pic-a-nic baskets. But it turns out, it’s not just picnic baskets that bears are interested in. They also will go for garbage cans, particularly smelly ones.

They are known how to make a mess of people’s yards and driveways after rummaging through their garbage cans.

They even make bear-proof garbage cans since the problem is so prevalent.

Thankfully there are lots of things you can do to keep bears at bay. provided some helpful tips for keeping bears from your property.

The main they say to do is to keep smelly garbage away from your home:
“Keep compost piles and bins away from the house and don’t add fish, meat, fat, oils, un-rinsed eggshells or any cooked food to compost,” they wrote.

They also say to keep an eye on fruit trees and grills:

“Harvest fruits frequently and pick up fallen fruit. Store garbage cans and recycling bins in the garage or another secure place.

Simply keeping them covered isn’t enough. Store barbecue grills in a protected location and clean them frequently.”

But sometimes even those measures can’t keep bears at bay.
Sometimes you need to take on more creative measures in order to get rid of a bear problem. And one man from Salem, Virginia did just that.

A bear had been eating out of his trash for weeks and got the perfect idea when he spotted a creepy-looking Halloween doll at the local pharmacy.

It was a creepy clown that waves its arms around and makes loud sounds when it’s activated by motion.

So, he decided that he would strap the Halloween decoration onto his trash bin to see if it would scare the bear away when it was activated by the bear’s movements. He then shared the video on YouTube.

Many people to the comments of the YouTube video to discuss the dad’s unorthodox bear-detering tactics. One person wrote:
“Even bears are afraid of clowns.”

Another included a clever pun:

“too much to bear !”

That is one freaky-looking clown. This clown would certainly deter some humans with coulrophobia (a fear of clowns) from digging in the trash, but will it scare the bear?
