They say that happiness is only real when shared. Adventures are always extra fun when you have your friends by your side, and who’s a better companion than man’s best friend?Fortunately for David Bahnson, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Vermont, he’s figured out the perfect way to share his favorite pastime with his pets – by building a kayak designed with them in mind, making sure he could take his Golden Retrievers, Susie and Ginger, along with him.
Mr. Bahnson first came up with the idea of taking his dogs on his kayak rides, when he realized that Susie was able to fit inside the baggage compartment when the cover was removed. He then fitted a ring around the opening to help her stay dry during their outings on the river. Then after he and his wife took in Ginger, he created another compartment for the pet so he and the two dogs could go out together.
In an interview with The Dodo, he said that,“They seem to love it, they get excited when we’d pull the kayaks out and see that we were going.”It doesn’t take much to convince his furry friends to settle into their seats when its time to go out for a ride. In fact, though Bahnson rarely paddles out too far from land, the dogs seem to understand how to keep safe on their journeys.
Mr Bahnson told The Dodo: ‘It’s like a triple kayak, only there isn’t enough room for the paddlers to put their feet — but it’s perfect for a dog. ‘They are trained to get in the kayak themselves on command. They sit down, and off we go. When we come ashore, they’ll stay seated until I tell them it’s OK to get out.
Sadly, Susie and Ginger have both since passed away after lives filled with adventure with Bahnson in the custom boat he built for them. But his tradition continues on with the family’s newest dogs.
“I love my dogs. I love training them, the companionship. We’ve gone miles and miles of paddling with our dogs,” said Bahnson. “They just really enjoy going places.” he told the dodo.
